Where to Enjoy an Afternoon Tea in Dorset

Blogs

Being based in Poole means we get to enjoy some of the best of the Dorset coast on our doorstep, and that extends well beyond the office. Afternoon tea is a small, unhurried pleasure worth making time for, and this part of the world does it particularly well – from a proper sit-down affair with a view over the water to a simple cream tea in a historic garden. Here are five of our local favourites, in no particular order, covering everything from a celebratory treat to a relaxed afternoon out with the family.

Harbour Heights Hotel, Poole

We couldn’t write this list without including one practically on our own doorstep. Set high on the Sandbanks peninsula, Harbour Heights has tiered terrace seating and a view that genuinely has to be seen in person – Poole Harbour spread out below, with Brownsea Island in the middle distance and, if you time it for early evening, a sunset that puts on a proper show. The tea itself is a classic spread of finger sandwiches, warm scones and cake, with a prosecco option if you’d like to make more of the occasion. Prices vary depending on the package, so it’s worth checking directly when you book – but for the view alone, this is one of our favourites.

Upper Deck at Harbour Hotel, Christchurch

Right on the harbourside, with a covered, heated terrace that keeps the view over the water on the menu whatever the weather’s doing. The kitchen leans on locally caught seafood elsewhere on the menu, and the setting alone makes this one worth booking ahead for, particularly on a clear afternoon when the light over the harbour does most of the work for you. Prices vary, so it’s worth checking current rates when you book, and weekends tend to fill up fastest.

Captain’s Club Hotel & Spa, Christchurch

A little further along the water, this one looks out over the River Stour from a riverside terrace – a genuinely lovely spot to while away a couple of hours. There’s a champagne option for something a little more celebratory, a more relaxed cream tea if you’d rather keep it simple, and a proper dietary-alternatives menu covering gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan, provided you give them notice. Booking is essential.

The Stables Café, Kingston Lacy

Worth a mention even though it’s not a formal afternoon tea service – Kingston Lacy, the National Trust property near Wimborne, has its café set inside the original 1776 kitchen block, serving cream teas, sandwiches and cake in a genuinely historic setting. It’s self-service and informal rather than a sit-down occasion, but the house and gardens around it make it a lovely way to build an afternoon out, particularly if you’re bringing family along who’d rather explore than sit still for two hours.

Frieda’s Tearoom, Bournemouth

For something with a bit more personality, Frieda’s is an independent tearoom with vintage china and cosy, quirky decor that reviewers consistently single out. It’s popular enough that afternoon tea looks to run on specific pre-booked days rather than every day of the week, so it’s worth calling ahead to check availability. Gluten-free and vegan options are available.

Hotel Collingwood, Bournemouth

A reliably good, clearly priced option at £24.50 a head, served in the hotel’s Bluebird lounge – finger sandwiches with a distinctly local touch (Dorset cheese and chutney among them), warm scones with clotted cream, and a spread of mini cakes including a Dorset apple cake. If you fancy making an afternoon of it, they also run a cocktail-making session alongside the tea itself for £39.95pp. Gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan requests are accommodated with 24 hours’ notice.

A couple of tips before you go

Most of these get busy at weekends and around bank holidays, and the smaller, independent spots in particular tend to have limited afternoon tea sittings rather than running it as a permanent daily menu – so a quick call before you set off, especially for Frieda’s or anywhere with a specific dietary requirement, saves a wasted trip. If you’re planning a special occasion, the harbourside and riverside settings at Christchurch are worth booking well ahead of time, since the views are exactly why people go.

A small thank you to the place we call home

We’re lucky enough to work with clients across Poole, Bournemouth and the wider Dorset area, and pieces like this are our small way of saying we’re genuinely part of this community, not just based in it. And if a pot of tea and a chat sounds appealing for more than just the scones – we’re always happy to put the kettle on for a proper conversation about your finances too, no obligation attached.

Prices, opening days and menus are correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of writing (September 2026) but can change, so it’s always worth checking directly with the venue and booking ahead.
